Making your own homemade pizza sauce is a great way to create your perfect pizza. You can experiment with different seasonings and spices to truly make it
your own perfect pie.
Here are a few recipes to get you started. Feel free to modify to fit your tastes!
Slow-Cooked Tomato-Based Pizza Sauce
Ingredients:
3 TBSP olive oil
1 large onion diced
3 cloves of garlic minced
1 28oz can crushed tomatoes or 2 pounds fresh tomatoes
1 8oz can tomato paste
1 1/2TBSP honey (can substitute sugar)
1 – 1 1/2 TBSP each of dried oregano and basil
salt and pepper to taste
Stove Top Directions:
Heat the olive oil over medium heat, then add the diced onions and cook until soft. Add the garlic and allow cooking an additional 2 - 3 minutes. Do NOT burn the
garlic. Add the remaining ingredients, turn the heat to low and allow simmering for at least 30 minute
Crock-Pot Directions:
Add all your ingredients to the crock. Set on low for 7-8 hours or high for 3 - 4 hours.
Makes enough for about 4 12" pizzas.
Chunky Pizza Sauce
Ingredients:
28 oz. can diced tomatoes, undrained
3 tbsp. olive oil
1 tbsp. dried basil
1 tsp. dried oregano
½ tsp. dried marjoram
2 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
¼ tsp. salt
3-4 cloves of garlic, finely minced
Directions:
Combine all ingredients in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, and then reduce the heat to a simmer. Allow tocook for at
least 15 minutes. Remove from the heat. (You can use a potato masher or blender to break up the chunks of tomato if you prefer a less-chunky sauce).
Store in an air-tight container in the refrigerator.
